CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Sara Lance
Canon: Arrow

Pull Point: End of S02E13.
History/World Setting: Sara was once your average college party girl. Then she decided to go on a trip with her sister's boyfriend (whom she had a major crush on) to spite her sister. All was well with the world, until the boat decided it was a good idea to sink in the middle of nowhere ocean during a storm. Sara was sucked out and left for dead, no one around to help her.

She drifted aimlessly, until she was found by ship full of people in cages being experimented on by a crazy scientist man looking to create a stronger and better human race through a Miracle (MIRAKURU) serum. Instead of making her one of his projects, he makes her his assistant, using the fact that he saved her life to manipulate her.

Fast forward a year later and the ship happens upon a certain future green-clad archer. Reunited with a link to her past life, she starts to see a life beyond Ivo and the experiments on his ship. But first she must join forces with Oliver and co to find that Miracle Serum Ivo has searched so long and hard for.

Being with Oliver again reminds her of a past life, and he reminds her that she's better than what Ivo's turned her into. So she turns against the "good" doctor, telling him to shove it (in many more words) and joins up with Ollie to stop DeathstrokeSlade Wilson from going all Cray on Ivo's ass for killing his not!lover.

We know from things Oliver has said, that he believes she died on the island, even a year after the shipwreck. We can assume then, that Ivo or DeathstrokeWilson, or some other unknown party nearly killed her and once again, she was left for dead.

Fast forward again, to some unknown period of time later, and Sara is found by Nyssa Al Ghul, daughter of Ra's Al Ghul leader of the infamous League of Assassins. Nyssa nursed her back to health, and inducted her into the League where she learned how to fight, how to kill, and how to fall in love again. She struck up a relationship with Nyssa and it can be fantasized that the two cut a swarthy lesbian path of death across the world.

Fast forward again, to approximately four years later. Starling City is falling apart, and The Hooded Arrow Vigilante (seriously, guy needs to come up with name) is there to fix his city and save it from those who would see it destroyed. Unfortunately, the one who would see it destroyed is another figure from the League (and Ollie and Sara's past) who went astray, and he sets off an earthquake machine in the poorer part of town (that's not Florida even if it's called 'the Glades').

Sara shows up, finally, back in her hometown - after six long years - to see if her family is okay. And to maybe do a little bit of feminist justice while she's at it under the guise of The Mysterous Masked Blonde(tm), or the Canary actually, but in Arabic. Eventually her presence attracts Oliver's attention, and the two come face to face once more, and once again, she's not dead.

He tries to convince her to stick around, but after an attempt on her family's life, by the League - which, tired of all the killing, she ran away from - she decides it's safer for them if she's not around. However she doesn't get away without her dad finding out she's still alive and doing his level best to also convince her to stay. She won't put their lives in danger.

However some people are in the belief that her family would be better off with her there. Her sister, for instance, headed on this downward spiral of pills and alcoholism after the death of her lover whom she cheated on with he ex right before he died. Maybe, just maybe Laurel might be better off if Sara were alive and not dead.

Like clockwork she shows back up in town to help her family, in secrecy of course. But Nyssa Al Ghul has other plans for her dear Canary who has flown from her cage. She purposefully poisoned Laurel to lure Sara back to Starling where she could confront her and try to drag her back to the League. Instead of letting her family become the pawns in Nyssa's game to win her back, she decides to sacrifice herself. A move NO ONE saw coming (even Ollie and his team).

Sara makes her goodbyes, her apologies while she lays dying, not what Nyssa wanted at all. When Oliver arrives he tells Nyssa that he can save Sara, if she'll let him. They fight instead, but one final plea from Sara ("no more killing") seems to get to Nyssa. She releases the Canary from her obligation to the League and flees. Oliver gives her the antidote to the poison she drank, and she is reunited with her family, including her vouyeristic sister watching the whole things from the sidelines.

You'd think all well that ends well. Sara is alive, her family knows it, she's been released from the League of Assassins. But Laurel doesn't see t that way. All she sees in her increasingly depressed state is the girl who stole everything from her, including her boyfriend and her parent's happy marriage, and never even bothered to phone them to be like "beeteedubs guys, i'm alive lol". So Sara is more or less disowned by her sister.

She's not giving up though. She's going to stick around for her family, for Oliver, for herself. Did I mention Oliver? Because that's a thing, she's sticking around for. 'Cause there was some serious makeouts going on.

Personality: Sara is an ever developing character. We see her briefly through flashbacks as young, a little reckless. She comes home for the weekend and immediately her parents worry about her flunking or dropping out of college. She likely has a history of flaking in school, and partying too much. (also evidenced when she tells Laurel that they both know at least ten different girls Oliver has slept with.)

She could also go from thoughtful to spiteful in seconds given the right circumstances. She may have been something of a party girl with a crush on her sister's boyfriend, but she wasn't without conscience. She was originally skeptical about going on the trip with Oliver. She knows her sister is dating him and it makes her hesitate. She stops to ask Laurel exactly how serious they are to gauge whether or not she wants to actually take this leap. When Laurel talks about moving in together, she tries to discourage this by reminding her what kind of guy Oliver is, because Sara knows he's still that kind of guy.

Instead of taking it as advice Laurel freaks out on her. That's when Sara decides, for sure, to sleep with her sister's for serious boyfriend. We see that she's still a little unsure, even once they're on the boat in the middle of the ocean, but Ollie's able to convince her (winkwink) not to worry about it.

After the shipwreck everything changes for her. Life is no longer easy, and she learns to do what she has to to survive. Even if that thing is helping to experiment on other human beings. It hardens her over the year she spends with Dr. Ivo. She learns to live in terrible conditions, doing terrible things, only so she doesn't become an experiment herself. Ivo manipulates and uses her, and it's the only life she knows until she meets Oliver again, a connection to her past.

Being reunited with Oliver again, puts her at odds with herself. She has to choose between letting her friend and his companions eventually die after Ivo's gotten what he wants, or turning against the man who saved her life, and didn't let her become some sick experiment. It puts her at odds with Oliver and with his friends because her first inclination is to just do what Ivo wants, because she thinks he'll let them go. That changes when he makes Oliver choose between her and Shado, and he shoots Shado right in front her. She starts to doubt him and the things he's capable of in the name of 'the greater good'.

She chooses the right side of course, the side against killing more people, the side in finding a way home with someone she cares about. Ivo tries to convince her to come back to him and give up Ollie and DeathstrokeSlade. She listens to everything he has to say, like maybe she might give in, then calls him out on his bullshit. She tells him she knows what kind of person he is, and how he's used her, and tells him she's through with all of that. She's chosen Oliver over him, a second chance at a real life.

Next time we see Sara, she's even more hardened, but not heartless. She's been living with the League of Assassins for the past four years, working for them, killing for them. But she doesn't like it. Every death takes a toll on her and she really just wants to get away.

Even though she still cares about people, she doesn't think she deserves to be loved anymore. Not for all the things she's done. It's one of the many reasons she hasn't come back to her family yet, or why she tried to hide from Oliver at first. Still she wants to see them, to make sure they're all right, after the catastrophe caused by Malcom Merlyn.

Sara is still so scared and unsure about so many things. She's been gone for so long, and she doesn't think anyone can love her after finding out about her past. (So many things to tell them, but what I can't decide. The truth about my past? Impossible. They'd turn away from me). So she's running away. It's actually one of the things she's best at. Instead of confronting a problem head on, she finds a way around it. Instead of telling Laurel about Oliver she runs away from him, instead of telling her family she's alive, she lurks in the shadows.

Oliver makes her confront all that finally. He doesn't let her keep running, and she finally starts to learn that maybe, people can still care about her. That maybe she does deserve to be cared about by the people she loves. While Oliver forced her to confront her fears, it's her dad that ultimately teaches her that lesson. He still loves her, still wants her to be in his life, even after she explains about the League and how she's killed people.

She leaves anyway, but to protect her family, making her father promise to keep her alive status a secret. Her sister and mother will scour the earth for her should they know, and she wants to protect them. She can't have the League going after her family, so she leaves.

When she finally does come back she has to confront her fears of sticking around despite the dangers it possesses, and even those dangers itself as her former lover and master assassin are there to drag her back. Here Sara shows how selfless she can be. Nyssa's trying to drag her family into this, and Sara won't let that happen. She also can't go back to the killing, not now that she's out of it, not now that she has friends again (in Oliver and his team). So instead of letting Nyssa kill her mother, or drag her back to the League, she poisons herself. This way she can be free, and her family will be free, and no one will have to die because of her, and she won't have to kill anymore. It seems like the perfect solution. Though in the end, it could be considered running away once again.

However after it's over, and Nyssa's released her from her ties to the League, and Oliver saves her life, she decides she's done running. She's come home, despite her sister's volatile reaction to her homecoming. It's upsettng (Oliver points out that she's been crying), but she doesn't let her drive her away. She's got her mother, her father, she can work things out with her sister, and she's got a place in life. Here in Starling City, fighting crime with Oliver. And making out with him too
